How fast does fin rot come on?
Is there any other signs or symptoms that will help me?
All of a sudden his tail just started disapearing (within 24 hrs), I took him out of the tank and QT'd him.... next morning I decided to put him back in with others (1 pineapple swordtail, 2 guppies, and 1 Marble Mollie), and darn if one of the guppies and the swordtail just kept bugging him!!!!

Maybe loss of tail from fin rot? Or bites?

I have a 10 gallon tank, with filter and heater.
keep it about 76 degrees.
Nitrate= 15 (I know... too high.. but it just peeked to there)
Nitrite= 0
Hardness= 150
Alkalinity= 120
pH= 7.8

Fin Rot??

I don't know the amonia reading, sorry. :(
and right now I am out of town so I am not able to find out. I know the one little guy has died (last night) while in QT.

and another guppy (not the one that was attacking previously) is getting a split tail.

I suppose he will be dead by the time I get home :( !!!

I had been using Melafix for the past week (about 5 days), had taken out the filter as directed.... don't know what else to do.

Any suggestions?

woah did you actually take out the whole filter ???

also, is there anyone with the tank who can do a water change for you, following instructions on decholrinating etc ?

I am back home now.. I immediately did a like 90% water change (cleaned gravel and everything)... been home about 48 hours... and things are looking good. The one guppy's tail is a smidge better, but at least not worse!! As far as the filter goes I took out the white sack (looking) thing that has the cabon? in it. Filter machine is still attached and running. Feeding the fish less food, using Melafix, and some IchRid (pineapple has a large white spot on top of his back, and a salt like spot on fin), I plan on doing a 20% water change tomorrow morning (Wednesday). ... Anything Else I should know? OH... I bought an amonia tester.... I forgot what it read the other day, but will check it again after water change?

Thank you

Well, you need to leave that white sack thing in there. Just dump out the carbon put it into a plastic baggy or something. The white sack thing is actually your filter, that is what removes the floating debris and is actually what makes you water clean. Without that, you are pretty much just making a current, and aren't really doing any good to your water.

Not necessarily, if that's like my Aquaclear, it has a sponge, a white sack of carbon, and a little bag of ceramic balls. They can all be removed and replaced seperately.

Jungle tabs work really well for fin rot but it sounds more like nipped fins to me.
