I went to the landscape place and found a rock called Blue Ridge Rock. I tested it for calcium and yielded negative results. So far so good. I am now soaking it in some of my tank water in a cup. I will test the ph later to see if it affects it. What else should I make sure of before creating a backround with it?

Just was and scrub it good.

do a vinigar test, drop some vinigar on it and see if it fizzes

already did the vinegar test and did not fizz. seems like the ph is rising in my cup with a piece of the rock though, kinda stinks I had a good idea too.

I seemed to have made a miscalculation in my pH test. The pH did not rise and this will be the stone I am going to use in the tank. I think it is going to look nice, with the exception of the blue gravel my wife picked out, lol......but it is what she wanted so it will do for now. I think sand will look a lot more natural, but in due time.

You have to ease those things out of your tank... I finally got the rubber anemone my daughter bought out of my freshwater tank. It was umm flaking paint and hmm trapping old dirty water. :)

I still have the Easter Island head but it's completely overgrown my plants... just looks like a rock now.

Maybe that gravel will... collect debris? Or develop a layer of unsightly algae. Then your wife will come around.
