I have a 55g Malawi cichlid tank w/ Marineland Emperor 400. Works well but little noisy and ugly for my taste. Thinking of changing to Eheim canister. If you are using either an Ecco or classic, please let me know your advice:
1.Are the Eheims truly silent?
2. Priming- I read many conflicting reports. Are they easy to prime, do you recommend using the Eheim 'Water Installation Kits'- do these make priming and maintenance easier? should I buy the suction device they offer?
Thanks.

I have an eheim classic and an emperor 280.

1. Canisters are less noisier than an emperor especially when it comes to water noise. You can place the spray bar lower so that there is virtually no splashing noise. With an emperor there's always a splashing noise. You can hear a slight hum with the classics if you get really close but if you keep your canister under the stand and close the doors you'll never hear it.

2. I don't find priming to be that hard. I don't use the installation kits either. Once you prime it you never really have to prime it again unless you dismantle the hoses or take all the water out. You just have to suck on the outlet hose to prime it again.

I use eheim ecco and pro3e they are completely silent, the priming is automatic on the ecco, but I had a little problem with the pro3e. Rena xp2 xp3 are great filters too and silent

youre not required to suck on any hose with an eheim.. at least ive never done it.

I use the suction bulb device made by Eheim to get my Classic started on the rare occasions I need to re-establish the siphon. The Ecco is ridiculously easy to prime. Just follow the very clear enclosed instructions. Love them both but the Classic filters out more smaller gunk. It is more challenging to clean though, but not if you opt to put your media in bags or if you have one of the newer 2213's in which media is in one basket.

i have 3 eheim 2213s....two dont require any sucking but i think i need to replace the impellar on the other

got round being a sucker....

what i do now is pull the outlet pipe below the level of the canister and get the water going then quickly pull it up and inside the tank...works for that one until i get a new impellar

If there was a need to suck on a hose, to get a prime back on a canister after cleaning...It would not be worth having, no matter how quiet.
