For about the past week or so my Nitrates have been going up, little by little. The highest they achieved was about 7 or so. Today I tested again and they are at 0. I'm going to test again tomorrow, but I was wondering if Nitrates at 0 are a bad thing. My readings are:

Ammonia 0
Nitrates 0
Nitrites 0
pH 7.8

How old is the tank? Plants?

Also, if you just did a large WC and tested soon after, this is known to happen. I wait 2 hours after a WC to test the water.

The tank is 5 weeks old. Plants are fake.

I am going to do a water change soon, but haven't done one in a week.

With the info you provided i would hold off on the wc, assuming your Ammo. and Rites are 0, Rates are the bi-product of these two readings, i have never had a reading of 0 Rates in a cycled tank, even after a masive wc, but i guess its possible, from what i remember you should have a big enough bio load...wait a little longer.....

:)

k, I'll wait another week. I was pretty surprised that the number went down. I have added about 1 gallon of water to help fill the tank above the show line. Maybe adding that water 3 days ago changed that reading.

Okay, retested today and my readings are:

Ammo 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate ~7
pH ~7.9

I must have done something wrong when I tested the water. Seems all is back to normal.

Make sure you shake the liquid testiong bottles prior to use. This can easily cause your readings to be off by a large margin.

ARGH!!! Just lost a Silver Molly today! =( I'll post about this situation. Man, I loved that Molly.
