Well, it's been getting pretty warm here in the Chicago area, it was up to about 89*F. Well, I came home, and my 10g tank was up to almost 89*F, and one of my corys was dead. :( I float ice bags in the afternoons when I am home, and until it gets actually warm enough to actually turn the air conditioner on at night, What else can I do to prevent soaring temps? Do fans pointed at the tank help? I know taking off the glass top will also help, and maybe shutting off the lights? I normally keep it around 79*F.

I dont want to invest in a chiller, that's kinda why im asking for advice.

I know, the reason we don't have ours on here is because it gets cold at night, like middle 40s, but pretty warm during the day. This is just temporarily until it stays warm all day so we don't have to turn the AC on and off on and off.

In the short term, you can have a fan blow over the surface of the water. Be aware, though, that the water will evaporate much more quickly! This should work until you're able to let the AC kick in. :)

Should I lower my water levels a few inches so that I could leave the lid off and not worry about fish jumping out? Maybe Ill go to the hardware store and buy a piece of screen to put over the top, because I also have snails, and my big one likes to escape. I've found him wandering in my room several times, I think he escapes through the filter.

Sure! The screen wouldn't hurt. :)

I had a visi-therm heater die on me, but it didn't stop heating, rather it got stuck in the on position. When I went home from work my tank was at 82, when I arrived back in the office in the morning the tank was up to something like 96 and climbing. I opened the lid, pointed a fan at the top of the water and had the temp back down to 86 in less than an hour. A fast fan can really cool a tank down quickly, and a slow fan can keep a tank cool, especially if you can put it on a timer or something.

my levels aren't off, so my cory must not have died too long before I checked on my tank and discoverd the awful disaster.

NH4+ 0
Nitrate 0
Nitrite ~7
Temp now is 79*F

I have all of my lighting on a timer. The daylight, (CF 20W natural daylight) is on for about 10.5 hours, and the lunar light is on at night. Would it do any harm or stress to the fish if I don't have their daylight light come on in the morning and just leave my blinds open for them to have minimal light to help keep the temp low?
