Today I took my male betta, dwarf platy and mystery snail (and baby pond snails) out of my 5g and transferred them to a 10g. The idea was to use the same stones, same filter, same plants and decor, same everything from the 5g into the 10g and leave the 5g empty for the time-being. A serious problem arose when everything was set up in the 10 and I primed and plugged in the filter from the 5g. It didn't work! Dead to the world! It is/was an Aqua-tech 5/15 hob and only just over 2 months old. Anyway, I had a used Penguin bio-wheel mini from the 10g (not used recently so no good bacteria in it) so I grabbed that one, stuffed both the blue pad and the white pad from my dead one into the penguin, put the old bio-wheel on it also, primed it and it is now running, thankfully, in the 10g. What should I do? Can I/should I replace that wheel part? Is that type of filter supposed to have the white pad in it or only the blue pad? There is room for the white pad and I need the bacteria right now so I would like to leave it in. I'm terrified of having to cycle again and was definately not expecting this little hiccup in my transfer plans.

try wiggling the impeller some on the old filter.. are you absolutely sure it's dead? sometimes the impeller will get stuck and all you have to do is plug/unplug a few times or wiggle the intake tube to set it loose.

I'll try refilling the 5g so that I can play around with the filter some more but I did try removing and reinserting the intake tube and repeatedly plugging and unplugging the power cord and there was absolutely no response - no humming, no gurgling, no warmth, no pulse at all. The Penguin unit appears to be working fine and the tank is clearing well. If I can get some clarification about the wheel and using the two pieces of filter media from my 5g filter then I'll hopefully be OK here. Thanks.

Thank you both for the advice. J Double R, you were right on the money. In a calmer moment, I refilled the 5g and took the filter apart including the impeller which I had never done before, plugged it back in, and what do you know, its fine. Must have been stuck just like you had suggested. So I have taken the Penguin back out, put my own filter back in with my own media back in again and and hopefully all will be well. Horray!

Is the Penguin a better filter than the Aquatech 5/15? Also, the blue charcoal pad from the 5/15 seems to fit perfectly in the Penguin as does the 5/15's white bio-filter. Is the Penguin supposed to have the white pad bio-filter or does that wheel replace that? Thank you.

H3D, if you look at my first post on this thread, you'll see that I am hopefully already cycled by bringing everything from an existing tank over to this new one. I will be testing with my API liquid kit to be sure there are no glitches though. I am just wondering which filter to stick with. Right now I'm back on the 5/15 since I got it to work again. Thank you.
