Hi I am considering setting up my 20 gallon as a saltwater tank not really sure what i am gonna want but tinking about FOWLR to start with than maybe later uping to a bigger tank and going reef but for now wanted to see ho it goes with the 20g
I am totally clueless about saltwater growing up i was always around freshwater so not really sure how to go about a saltwater or what all i will need im guessing sand for substrate and live rock for the filtration and places for the fish to hide etc im just curious what all i will need including testing equipment (im a compleate newbie)

wow the lists are huge...best thing to do is look over all the stikies in the marine newbie section and browsing for posts. ull need
heater(titaniums are best)

good salt mix like reef crystals

test kits for all the basics adn whatever u add, nitrate, nitrite, ph, alk, ammonia and a hydrometer or refractometer to measure salinity

aragonite sand is best to use

lights; basic florescent are fine if no corals.

u want at least 8x to 20x turn over with pumps u can use power heads or even better korallia propeller pumps.

lots of reading and time spent learning, dont impulse by fish or corals, and take it slow and spend the extra money.

skimmers are optional but are very good for a heavily stocked or coral tank.
besides that its really just up to some reading and specific questions.
welcome to the salty side!
