i bought a small sun coral frag nine days ago. since then its tentacles have not opened even when I feed nearby or try feeding directly to it with a dropper. within the last two days i have noticed some discolouration starting as if it might be bleaching. does anyone have any ideas that may help me save this coral??
by the way, it is situated in a shady part of my tank, my perameters are all normal, all my other corals are doing great, and i recently started dosing my tank with iodine to make my corals happier

Is it lying ont he substrate at all? I have heard that if too much sand/sediment gets in between the polyps, it can cause recession of the flesh. Maybe it just needs time to adjust. Try asking the previous owner/company; sun corals can be "trained" to feed at certain times.

Oh, could you list your water parameters?

Thanks, hope this helps,

B.W.

I did not know that about the substrate but i think that may be it, because I originally did have it on the sand at the same time that I was tweaking the flow of my new powerhead and it got quite a bit of sand blown on it. I quickly cleaned it off with a turkey baster and have moved it to a more protected spot since then but the flesh does look like its recessing.
if this is the case is that a likely cause of its reluctance to open its tentacles and is it likely to recover?
i have been adding the iodine additive once a week and on the safer side of the recommended dosage for my tank size.
ammonia 0
ph 8.5
salinity 1.025
temp 79
i have yet to test for alkalinity
thanks for both of your help

Edit- sorry, wrong thread

thank you both thats great advice. right now its in a hole in a piece of liverock so light shouldnt be an issue, but circulation might. I am going to pick up some of that phyto additive and see if it helps it open, perhaps the brine shimp is just too big. heres a pic
