I see a lot of folks recommend 25-50% water changes weekly. I've been changing 10-20% every other day, vacuuming the substrate. Is this just as good as 50% once a week?

So you do water changes of 10-20% three times a week, approx, with a gravel vac. I don't know if it's as good as 50%, but if you gravel vac three times a week isn't that gonna stress the fish out?

I would think especially that often they might get used to it. I did daily water changes and every other day for a while, no one seemed bothered. I have noticed that a smaller size barrel and less 'suction' speed from the gravel vac reduced the stress somewhat.

I bet you have a beautifully sparkling tank. Or maybe you don't like the look of pooh. (I don't either.)

I guess only you can tell if it's working for you or not, based on the parameters, health and behaviour of the fish, etc.

Nah, they're Goldfish. They love the attention. :D

It is really clean and clear. I hate the thought of all that detritus rotting in the gravel.

Actually come to think of it, may be more than every other day. Maybe 4 or five times a week. Been doing it more since I got my Python. :o

Any animal will get used to any repetition (re: World record Deer shot inside NYC!) Heck, my fish try to peck at the tube for the floating "food" they think they see lol

Anyways, the more PWCs the better is the rule, but you want to make sure you are doing enough to get your maintenance done, which in this case it sounds as you are. ;)

Personally, I do 50% a week, plus a 10-15% mid-week to syphon off any poopies :D My 75G has a Pleco...and my 30G is a bit overstocked.

I hear Goldfish are poopers too! ;)

Well, math wise, the 50% every week is better as an end result, than 10% every other day.
