I was thinking about keeping a Discus tank in the future and wondered what mix would be possible. I was thinking along the lines of (in a 240-300 litre):

Discus (how many)

Fire Eel (how many)

Some sort of lage cat; what would you suggest

Armoured Shrimp.

Couple of Zebra Plecos.

Any thoughts on this please?

Most plecos tend to bother the discus by attaching to their sides to feast on the tasty slime coat. One species that does not do this is the bristlenose pleco, which I have had with no problems with them. I also have ghost shrimp to clean up on bottom, they dont mind the high temps (plenty of hiding for them also) Certain cories can do well at those temps too (Stendai I believe). Cardinal tetras and a few other schooling tetras also do well.

Conventional wisdom is to allow 10 U.S. gallons (38 liters) per adult discus. Also, unless they are in a pair, keep them in a group of at least six to keep them comfortable and prevent them from constantly picking at each other (discus are schooling fish).

That doesn't leave much room for anything else. But commonly recommended tankmates are BN plecos (won't suck on them ) Steribai corys (can take the high heat), and cardinal tetras (can also take the heat). Other cichlids are not recommended; rams being the exception.

Great stuff, I take it they tend notto eat inverts...I'm thinking about Armoured (Columbian) Shrimp beacuse they get big (30cm)...basically Bamboos with Armour!
