View Full Version : Lophiobagrus species - how many are there ?
Hey there catfish experts.
Lophiobagrus...I've found descriptions of two species : brevispinis & cyclurus.
Are there any more ?
further catfish question
what species have their mouths on top of the face ?
and sorta extend their mouths almost like a nozzle to feed ?
and sorta look like a senegal bichir ? as eel like elongated body.
I ask because I was sold two lophiobagrus...at least that's what the label said...my LFS is usually very good. They don't look like any pics I can find thogh.
gah! I think these are Erpetoichthys or polypterus
and if so I have to catch the little buggers and bring them back. Gah ! Gah!........Gah!!!
here's a sketch...scaled body, rusty/grey/black colouration, red touch to face
and as woofy rightly points out it can't be a bichir with a dorsal fin like that can it
mouth is above eyes
I should also have drawn in bichir like nodules on the nose
Thats a very cute sketch ...i'll try to help ya

Check out planetcatfish.com ? If you can't find the mystery fish in the cat-e-log there, borrow a digital camera and snap a pic or two. No offense, but the drawing isn't much help for an ID...
I know - I was just trying to show the fins and mouth position. It ain't on planet catfish from my searches so far

Cute, Coler! rofl The eyebrow is a nice touch.
that's its mouth durnit !!
well they're not dead ! hadn't seen them in three days...got a very blurry picture...
unfortunately these were the best I have gotten so far.
Ignore previous descriptions of fins I was somewhat wrong. they are :
caudal fin, anal fin, dorsal triangular fin closer to tail than head, ventral fin slightly in front (closer to head) of dorsal fin, two pelvic fins (thoracic).
eyes and mouth are on top of head. head is higher set than eyes. two nodules, bichir like on nose.
behaviour highly nocturnal, sometimes rests motionless/stationary on substrate with upper third of body suspended in the water.
the mystery is solved they are Phractolaemus ansorgii
Here is a better picture of one (not mine)
