View Full Version : Got a question about RO water storage.......

Hi all

I recently decided to invest in an RO wate system. However, i went the cheap route and I bought a Bare Bones unit off of Ebay. Well it came to me without the prefilter (which I knew) and the membrane in it is not a barebones ones but a osmonics one. (CTA-16 to be exact). Now just for fun I decided to try a test run thinking that the prefilter basically filters out the sediment and not much else. Well, when I tested the water the membrane did not filter any of the phosphate or iron out of the water, and who knows what else was left in there. So my question is whether any one has one of these units with the proper equipment, and if they do are they satisfied with it? The site says it should filter out 87-95% of all the stuff in tap water......

My other question involves the storing of RO water. I live in a small apartment and I don't have a whole lot of room. And I cant really install anything into the plumbing or anything like that. Is my best bet to just get a large (15) gallon container of some sort and store it that way?

I've been getting excellent plant growth. I do CO2 (ph 6.6 kh 4), I use flourite, I dose with stump remover and fleet, but I just can't get rid of the algae........so I'm convinced it has to be something in the water in Lexington.

Sure! A whole bunch of people store it in that manner!

I'm very satisfied with the R/O system I have.

There are some other companies out there that sell these, but I happened to think this company had the best quality and customer support.

Thanks Joe......I' think I'll go and get a new membrane and see how that works out.

i have a RO i like it.
another route is PUR (http://www.purwater.com/index.shtml) or Brita (http://www.brita.com/index.html) (i have had both of these and i like them too. brita tastes the best IMO:D)

Hey,
A fellow Lexingtonian!

Do you keep Discus? I was wondering why you were using the RO. I do RO as well because I keep Discus. Otherwise, I would not use the RO - too much trouble for your planted tank.

What does your phosphate run? I would guess, and many would back me up, that the reason that you have algae is because of an imbalance in the nutrients.
We've both got the same water and I don't have any algae (well, a very small amount) - so it must be an imbalance in your system. I see that you dose phosphates - our water here in Lexington is high in phosphates and I never have to dose phosephates. I just do a 80% RO and 20% tap water change once a week and it provides me all the phosphates that I need (2ppm). I just dose the potassium sulfate, potassium nitrate, Iron and trace elements.

email me and I'll try and help you out.
We are also starting up a fish club here in Lexington - You can go to Just Fish on Rosemont Garden here in Lexington to find out more.
