This is something that you guys may have thought of already. I bought a $15 kitchen/probe thermometer. Inserted the probe into the tank and left the sensor stuck to the top.

Here's the cool bit. You can set certain temps (high and low) in the thing. So I have an alarm if the tank gets too hot or too cool.

One AA batt last for a year or so (in my other kitchen thermo).

Just thought I'd share. It might be useful for someone.

I use one that is made for wine. You can set those to go off when a temperature is reached (great for calibrating heater units)

cool idea. for me at the end of the day it comes down to buying a heater i trust.

Aren't some of those probes made of toxic metal?

If the probe is in my fudge, then it better not be made of toxic metal!!!

exactly. Anything thats food-safe is fish-safe.
