Okay, I've only kept FW so far, but I see so many beautiful nanoreefs that it is very tempting to start one in the future.

Can I just ask one question. Is the Red Sea Max system decent for keeping a small reef? I just like the all-in-one style and the fact that I won't need to figure out all the protein skimmer stuff/lighting on my own. Can you keep a decent selection of live rock, inverts and fish in one of these?

Thanks!

Sure you can! Just take out the filter media and put macro algae or live rock rubble. With the lighting it has you can have softies like mushrooms, xenia, leathers, and lots more.

With all due respect - if you want to make a long-term success of this hobby, you WILL have to learn about skimmers, lighting, filtration, water chemistry (magnesium, calcium, alkalinity, pH...) and of course the requirements of ALL the animals you plan to keep. Better to do the "figuring out" before you start - it will save you a lot of headaches in the future, and will possibly also save some of the animals you put in your tank.

I don't know this Red Sea Max system, and as such don't have anything against it - it might be sufficient for your short term needs, but for long term success you still need to know how everything works...

Oh, I understand completely. I do intend to learn as much as possible before buying anything! I just wanted to know if the Red Sea system was suitable as a starter reef tank (i.e. if the components included are sufficient for a beginner).

I guess what I really meant to ask is whether or not the kit has any major flaws or defects if I plan to use it as my starting point. I have a lot of research ahead of me, and to my mind this was a great way to ensure that the animals in the tank have all the basics covered.

For what you want you want, that tank is a great starter... Personally, I would double the flow... maybe change the pumps to larger ones or add another pump... changing the two pumps to maxi jet 1200's (no idea if it will fit though) or adding a maxi jet 1200 or koralia 4 should do it.

So I guess the next question is whether this tank is worth it. It's 32g and $1,300CDN including the stand. My brain is telling me I could likely do a 38g bowfront for about half that price if I chose my own components... Since Ihave never priced SW before, is that price out to lunch or what you would expect to pay including lights, heater, filtration, flow, and skimmer...

is there a craigslist that serves canada? I would check to see if there is. 1300CDN (not sure what that converts to US) but im willing to be you could find something bigger and better if craigslist caters to Canada.

EDIT: Here Ya go http://winnipeg.craigslist.org/

$1,300 CDN is about $1,100 US or so right now... I've seen lots of used tanks go up for sale in the area, but they are rarely bargain priced. A used 55g FW setup is normally around $450!

Oh, and I know it's being picky, but I don't like used tanks/equipment. I just don't trust them.

So, is $1,300 a decent price for new?

Seems ridiculously expensive to me...lol. I'll bet I don't have much more than $1300 CAD in my 55g with stand and pumps and skimmer and lights and 75 lbs of rock and 40 lbs of sand and 20+ corals

AND

my newly set up 29g with 40 lbs sand, 30 lbs rock and pumps and skimmers.

But, I heavily rely on used equipment. It's the stuff. It's like buying exercise equipment. People buy the stuff, hardly use it, lose interest, leave the hobby.

Go to www.nano-reef.com and do some reading.

That's a search for red sea. The first post in the first result is a guy from canada talking about his new 34g red sea max which he got for $999 CAD locally.

Might be worth a look, eh?
