I used to have a good amount of sucess keeping some of the more basic aquarium plants when i lived in an area with slightly acidic and soft water. Now however i live in extremely hard and alkaline water. Any cautions or suggestions for keeping plants in this type of water? Will it matter at all or will it matter so much that I should just give up. Tanks Specs - flourescent strip lights, no CO2, 55G, plain old aquiarium gravel for substrate. The tank is empty right now but wheather or not i will be able to keep live plants is going to have a big impact on the type of tank i build. (if i cant keep plants in hard water, im gettin african cichlids)

Here, we have a limestone aqafir to drive our water. GH=25+, KH=20+ and PH=8.1+

No major issues, but some plants dont like the combination - a lot was trial and error.

Ie, I can grow dwarf hairgrass, but down the street which has a different water source and much better parameters, his hairgrass is like a field.

But that could be said for any set of parameteters.

Good Luck
