I read on here somewhere that there is a difference between the clicking sounds of a mantis shrimp and a pistol shrimp. I can't remember which one had the multiple clicks or whatever the difference was. i also heard that one is more likely to click in the day and one in the night. Did a quick search and cant find the answer... any help???

The noise a pistol shrimp makes is usually only a few clicks as this is used to actaully stun the pray by the sound waves..So, normally, that is all you will hear from a pistol..

A mantis however, works differently. Mantis shrimps have two different types of claw and both are on seperate shrimp..Either one..the first has more like a hammer claw and will bludgeon the prey to death, so a common noise is the clicking of it attacking its prey. the other type of claw is a knife. and this is obviously used to stab its prey, and is usually always a silent attack...

So, noise wise, there is a difference between what both of these make. Pistol is an actual click, short succession and stops, a mantis is a continuous noise as it is beating its prey to break opena shell for example....

I hope i have explained that well enough for people to understand the difference in noise between the two...

The thing I hate most, is that it may be a mantis, but a small one which has gone unnoticed, and has not taken any fish, which eventually grows into a big one and suddenly fish start to vanish. Surely the mantis must make the sound at other times besides feeding? The tank is in a continual ticking melody. Maybe pistol shrimp use it as a mating call?

What a classic! Yesterday my comet betta was acting all strange and there was this crazy clicking sound, as if it was hitting glass, very loud and rapid. Anyways, I'm peering in today, and what the, there is old googly eyes peering back at me! weird thing is, he has obviously been in there for some time, but he is at least 3" long, most beautiful of creatures! I saw the length of his body when he was moving from rock to rock, and in the back ground I could hear those classic cello's paying... Trap is set, will post a pic when I catch him.

I thought the "googly eye's" part would of given it away ;). Most certainly is. The comet betta seems to have flushed him out from where ever he was living so long. I have spotted him several times since, must be looking for a new abode. Seems that he has taken a twin spot goby, if that is the worst that happens before I catch him, then I guess i'm doing pretty good.

This new live rock it very alive, the list keeps growing, i now have, 1 crab, 1 pistol shrimp, 1 small mantis only about 1/4 inch long, 2 other unidentified shrimps, several snails, sponge like growth, what could be coral frags, plus very rich looking rock. all in a 37 gallon, i hope all the shrimps go to war and start knocking each other off, hope something kills that mantis before i have to deal with him.
