These melanistic C. aeneus were being distributed to a few advanced Canadian aquarists a couple of years ago. The late Al Ngui sent me photos of them, and though I tend to dislike "aquarium" mutations, these were the handsomest little Cories I ever saw. The black had a warm purplish tone to it.
I wonder what's up with this interesting development. I heard they were a little tender.
