Hi
Just some info/advice my peppered catfish has these two what looks like water blisters next to his dorsal fin.I have had him for approx 9 months but he recently lost his friend (in the last month) and doesn't seem to hang with the Albinos in the tank so could it be stress? Has anyone ever seen this before????
Have checked the water all ok as normal........he is eating fine but just looks like he has blisters that are see through and they have appeared within the last 24 hours........any info would be appreciated....as a bit concerned and wondering whether to go get him some friends........

Not sure about the blisters--keep an eye out, use some Melafix if they worsen.
You definitely need to get him some buddies--corys are meant to be in groups of at least 4-6; the more the merrier!!! Since he's by himself now, he's stressed out. Get some more, and they'll play together.

Thanks for that, he used to have 2 other freinds and would play all the time but I lost the other two over the past 9 months and replace with Albinos as LFS advised they will all play together but the Albinos have so much fun and peppered just sulks.Still eats but yeh good advice I was thinking about getting some more so will go grab some today.
I did read in web that there is something called bubble disease but don't really understand if it is that how it's happened oh I'm just confused !!!!!
Hopefully he will de stress and blisters/bubbles will go away if not I may suggest he takes up yoga!!!
Thanks heaps

Gas Bubble Disease

is what is sounds like. I ran across it in a book I was reading today and remembered your question. It has something to do with the water being supersaturated with gases, and to cure it your supposed to add aeration, like an air stone or two. Hope that helps! :dance2:

Hi
Thanks for that.........sorry for the delay I have been uable to log on to this web site maybe tech probs!!
I have read a wee bit about gas bubble disease but got a bit confused about it.I didn't do anything any different to what I always do so it is strange.
Now that you have said that I will look into it more see what I can find......
Thanks heaps

when you say all ok do you mean ammonia & nitrite is 0 and nitrates are present but not over 20 (or at least certainly not over 40) ? and is your test kit reliable ?

any idea what killed the guy last month ?

Hi
Yes my water is good Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 20 ph 7 my test kit is in date and is red sea brand which I suppose is ok.
From my experiance (which isn't that great approx 10 months) I am getting used to the water and when it needs to be changed etc.I do a gravel vac around every 7 - 10 days. When I first started if I had a guppy sitting on bottom gulping then I would test the water and see that Ammonia was high or if my Loaches started to skip then Nitrite would be creeping up.There has been no signs like that for a while now as I am starting to get use to things and in the past if my Nitrates are up then when I gravel vac bubbles come up from the gravel all these tell tales signs have helped me learn. All is good and has been good latley and I am a lot more relaxed about the tank and my friends within...........I don't really know what I have done that could have been different this time (gravel vac) to what I have been doing in past cleans.
I have been wondering about my filter,it's an otto canister filter and the top sponge seems to be getting dirty as usual but the second sponge down seems a lot cleaner than it should be or has been in the past which as left me asking myself if it is working ok.It is the 3rd pump/filter (it has a power head) of this make I have had as other two stopped working which was a manufacture fault and was covered under warrenty.
I have just had a read of this gas bubble disease but am rather confused about it.
My Peppered catfish seems ok and is swimming eating but just has these see through water blisters on his back don't really want to treat the tank so can take him out and treat him with melafix in seperate tank............just a bit confused all other corys are ok so........I don't know
I don't really understand about this gas bubble disease I do and I don't!!!
Thanks for your input it's cetainly a good brain teaser!!!

Sorry just saw the last bit.........
I posted some info about a month ago, I fed my some extra wafers as couldn't find fish food (phone rang and put it down somewhere!!!) anyway I woke up to a very fat updise down Peppered catfsh!!! I flushed her with Epsom salts (wasn't sure whether to do it but had to do something) she made a full recovery amd I posted it on here as I was very proud of my self. She died approx 48 hours later!!!!!!!!!!

sounds like you're doing great (speaking as a fellow newbie)

as said above, keep an eye on him, and hopefully you will see some improvement. Melafix is pretty good for bumps, scrapes, wounds etc and its fairly non-aggressive as I understand it, so it wouldn't likely to any harm.

but hopefully you won't need it - clean water above all else, and you have that :)

Thanks for the boost of confidence Coler..............
It is hard, especially when there is so much conflicting advice from people. There seems to guidelines of course but for example where I live there is a huge aquarium hosting both fresh and marine tanks. The guy has been involved in fish keeping for many years and advises to put salt into fresh water tanks to kill pathogens........where as another aquarium down the road advises against it and even advises against testing water, he says unless you are a scientist you will have no idea what you are doing and the kits you by are just rubbish!!!!!! maybe what works for one may not work for another...!!!
It is hard but fun and very rewarding......I checked out your tank piccies and they look way cool, the fish know how to work it!! looks like your hard work has paid off,you have now inspired me to set up another tank!!!!!! It's a drug........................
Will keep watching my Peppered she is very happy just have a feeling the other fish are laughing at her as she looks rather odd with the blister looking bigger and smaller ones around it,she eating who knows watch this space......I'll get the burial grounds ready!!!!!!
