You can put a brick of foam underneath the tank, as it will allow the aquarium to sink to a level position.

I have my 55 on a boxed looking cabinet stand and it is on carpet. Never had a problem and its very level.

It may, but it absolutely has to be kept level or pressure cracks might start.

Things that make a difference:

Level-ness of floor.
How plush the carpet is.
How heavy the tank stand and tank are...
How much the floor can hold.

We do have very thick carpet, but my hubbie did construction for 12 years and he made sure the floor could support and made sure it was level. This is one of his pet peeves....lol

The carpet should act more or less the same as the foam, smoothing out minor imperfections and unevenness. For actual leveling issues use shims of some sort. Foam (or carpet) can only do so much. The tank should be level.

Follow carpguys advice, I put popsicle sticks underneath my tank stand, as shims, to help level the tank. It doesn't look crooked at all as the tank stand still sinks into the carpet and the shims provide just a little more support on one side.
