I was wondering if the "buy a whole bunch and hoping they pair up" method will work with them? If it does, how many inches do they have to be until they pair off? and, do they make good parents? I was thinking of putting them in a 90 gallon, or bigger if i can find a 5' long or under bigger tank (gallonage).

I know the whole buy a bunch and let them pair off works, as it says so in both of my Oscar books (from the authors' experiences).

No but its not hard to do once you can actually score a compatible male and female since you can't sex them, and then getting a good survival rate out of the fry. The only oscar reference I have other than the internet is neal pronek's and he doesn't seem very enlightened on these guy's.

i would say get like 6 and make sure you talk to the LFs and make sure they will take some of them back, cause i got stuck buying 6 blue acaras and got 1 breeding pair, got possibly 2 if i switch second possible pair. but the lfs wont take them back. so im stuck with 6 blue acaras i gave 1 to my brother and i got 5 in my 55g tank. and i also got 2 pacus that i was told were silver dollars and only get 6" where they get like 2 ft. and i now have learned that never to go to that lfs again.
