he's facing straight down with his body up in the air, standing on his claws, folded in... is this normal? he is alive and responsive.

My bamboo shrimp did that...but unfortunately he died about 3 hours later. I hope that's not the same fate for your crab. Good luck!

no picture, and he only did it for about an hour... seems ok now.

That's awesome news. Maybe he was just trying out his head spin that he saw on Dancing with the Stars (c)
