I have a 55g tank with 4 fancy goldfish. I got a 30g for the 2 "special" ones. Which leaves 30g left to stock in the 55. Any suggestions, other then goldfish?

Maybe some Rosy Red Minnows (Pimephales promelas)? Maybe a couple of weather loaches (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus)? Both of those will get larger than the mouth of the goldfish. Just not sure whether you would be able to squeeze in a small group of weather loaches.

Also, the rosy red minnows are usually sold as feeders, which could be risky as they might have diseases considering the way that they are usually kept in LFS. Although, I have kept them with 2 ryukins, a fantail and an oranda.

I doubt goldies will eat their tankmates. I have bettas with mine, and they get along very well. Although I do keep a fairly warm "coolwater" tank, at 75.
I also have apple snails, and they are absolutely totally wonderful. I adore them. Lots of personality for creatures with no brains! I'd definitely recommend them. Plus they're good at cleaning up leftover food! :)

weather loaches seem cool. They wont get too big will they? I want to be able to keep in that tank for life. I already have apple snails.

I think 2-3 round-bodied goldfish are the most you should have in a 55G. And actually, as they grow to their full size, the 55G will be too small for even one.

But their fancy goldfish. They aren't as big as the others.

Whoops, I have 25g open not 30g.

Fancy goldfish still get 8-10" in length. 4 of them in a 55 gallon is basically 1 fish per 13.75gallons, or 1.3 gallons per inch

Most of the stuff I have read here says 6-7in and 20g for first one and 10g for every additional one. On my 55 I have an Emperor 400(80g) and a Penguin 350(75g) Thats 155g of filtration.

IMO, I wouldn't add more.

Round-bodied goldfish grow eight times in body mass for each time they double their length. A 2" goldfish is equal to eight 1" goldfish. A 4" goldfish is equal to eight 2" or 64 1" goldfish. A 5" goldfish is equal to over 100 1" goldfish. When it reaches full size, it's equal to over 500 1" goldfish. This is why I say a 55G is barely large enough for even a single goldfish... and that's only if you have plenty of filtration and do frequent PWC's and monitor the water parameters closely.

Here is a simple chart showing how much their body mass increases as they grow. They should eat 2% when juveniles and then 1% of their body mass as they reach adulthood so they will still be eating, peeing and pooping as much as the 500 1" goldfish.

As much as I agree with Lenny, I think his 55g will do for the 2 of them. After all, there is always time to upgrade!!!!especially to a large pond.

For goldifish tankmates, I've found rosy red minnows to be great as they're cheap and prefer lower temperatures. JUST BE SURE TO QUARATINE THEM BEFOREHAND.

I keep my goldies at a high temperature (72-80*) so the option to add in tropical tankmates has come up before. I've kept mine with a pleco (dont even think about one unless your tank is 90g+), giant danios, weater loaches (dont recommend them either for your tank)), and other cheap feeder fish, like guppies.

I would say depending on what goldfish you are keeping, 3 would be the maximum for a 55 gallon. Another thing that would determine how many you can keep is temperature. If the tank is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, then the goldfish will move faster, and will produce more waste because of their faster movement, but if they are at 70 degrees, then they will move slower so they will produce waste at a slower rate.

they dont live as long nor do as well in tropical temps, they get deprived of oxygen.

An air stone can solve this problem, and also goldfish breathe from the surface.

It's true however that they won't live as long.

goldfish do not breath from the surface

I'll try to remember that next time :) The weather loaches part.

Thank you, legendary frog.
