Hello,
should the return water from the dt rush in so fast that it over flowsthe chamber the pipe drops in and overflow into the chamber the bioballs once held? or should the water flow thru the holes in the divider between the two chambers?
Thanks for your replys

I don't understand your question... There are sooo many different sump designs that very few people will without a pic and/or diagram.

sorry about that...after i read it i was confused too!...on the left in the back of the tank is the return from the dt..in a seperate chamber....in front of that you can see the bio balls, which i have removed...with the valve full open into the rear chamber the water rushes in so fast it over flows the divider which has holes drilled in it that i assumed was for the water to flow into the bio ball chamber.

Well, the reason why the chamber is overflowing rather than draining through the holes, is that the holes are not big enough to handle all the flow, or something is blocking the holes... It doesn't apear to hinder the sumps operation, so you can leave it if you like. If it's bothering you to hear the water overflowing, dismantle the sump and drill in a few more holes or enlarge the existing ones.

I would fill the chamber where the bio balls were with live rock rubble and increase you bio filter naturally.
Maby increase those holes for more flow too.
Just my opinion.

Is it rushing so fast that noise is a problem? as long as the flow through the refugium is not too fast, i would suggest leave as it is...

Atnixon...no ..noise is not an issue at alland the flow thru the fuge seems to be a nice, not to strong..
Mikie61.. there is aragonite for a sand bed and lr rubble in the fuge..soon to be some mangrove and/or chaeto...the dividers are acrylic and the tank is glass...im a little nervous about makin the holes larger! i just wanted to make sure i had the proper flow, seems to be working well.
Thank you all for your replys...it has set my mind at ease..for the time being..LOL

Atnixion....the only noise i get is from the water running into the overflow in the dt...i added more water and it deadend the noise but the level in the sump went to high...should the overflow in the dt be filled to the point where you dont hear the water running into it? the level in the overflow is about a 1/2" above the anti siphon hole

i found where all the noise was commng from....the 1 X 3/4" elbow on the return pipe has a crack in it and is spraying water against the overflow box!!! is the bulk head fitting a slip fitting...can i take out the 1" pipe and replace the 90(of course shutting the valve off first) with out damaging the bulkhead fitting?

That all depends on how the piepes have been fitted together to be honest, at face valve, no, i do see any issues with doing that..
Glad you found out where the noise was coming from...
