Is it useful in a heavily planted tank to put lights on the bottom of the tank (outside the tank, of course) shinning up at a 45 degree angle? Both back and front of tank? This would not obstruct the view so that people could still see the tank. Also, what about shining lights from the top, but behind the aquarium, again at a 45 degree angle?
My reason...I really like floating plants, but they cut down on the availability of light for other plants - and fish - underneath the floating ones.
Would this work?

hmmm... are there fish? if so, this could be very disturbing to their equilibrium and sense of up/down.
if you have to have floating plants, try stringing fishing line just under the water to 'pen' them in one area, that way theyre not coating the entire tank.

Never thought of that option - please try and let us know how it works.
Also, I dont think it could be good for fish, they are used to light = up. Dont know though.
Good luck

i would do what j double r said. put lower light plants under them and the higher light plants on the other side.
