chemical algae killers

i have an aquarium that houses crawfish that gets little light but still there is a ton of algae. it is entirely rocks, no gravel, so there is algae everywhere. it forms a thick coat that is kind of gross to look at. taking away nutrients is kind of hard because i dont overfeed and i dont want to clean the tank any more often. this leaves me with one solution (i think): chemical algae killers. are there any that work against normal green algae that are invertebrate safe? how can i solve my problem?

oops i forgot two things:

i cant add any algae eating fish because they would be eaten by the crawfish.

my last resort is to add snails (but they might all get eaten), but i would rather try something else first.

Since you are only growing rocks, why not simply turn the light out for awhile? :)

It's free.Simple, all you have to do is flip a switch.

BTW, most algicides are extremely toxic to inverts also............sop see previous post.

The one time I used algae destroyer it killed all my shrimp. Bad Idea. There is really no harm in doing a good cleaning just do as much as you can then do what plantbrain said. wrap your tank in a towel and keep the lights off for a few days. For feeding time just let the room light in.

Is the tank near a window?
I have a tank in a room with no windows but at like 6am the sun comes in from the next room through the door and hits the tank. Its only for an hour of two a day but its enough to cover that one part of the tank in algae.

there is no light to turn off, the tank does not get any direct sunlight, and i know that most algaecides kill inverts. thats why i started this topic.

i find that hard to believe. there has to be SOME kind of light source, algae doesnt just grow out of the dark.

i said theres no direct sunlight and no aquarium light to turn off. i didnt say that theres no light at all. the tank gets indirect sunlight all day long and the room lighting for about 2 hours a day.

sounds like you might need to man up and clean it!


unfortunately i think you are right. but i wont do that before i add in some snails. the worst that could happen is they all get eaten.
