Very enjoyable and interedting. Thank you 80g Joe.
I was particularly arrested by this note: "We were told that after several seasons, the ponds lose their ability to grow fish quickly. At that point they are often abandoned and new ponds must be dug."
Hmm. The ponds are drained, dried and limed each season. I wonder whazzup with this?

Huh...do you have to lime ponds to get rid of whatever a golf cart could leave in them??? :)

How do the ponds loose their ability to grow fish? Also wouldn't lime be bad?

I'm not thinking that the pH change with lime is great for keeping Angels...

IMo the reason the ponds lose their ability to grow fish quick is that they lose the trace elemets over time that fish are in dire need of when they are babies.
The drain-down is to make catching the fish easier. The liming is to counteract the acid build-up in the soil that lines the pond. Excess food and masses of fish poop make for high acidity - just as in old aquaria. Without the lime the ponds would "die" even faster.
