Finally found a piece. I'll have to break off the long stick part and I'm not sure if it'll be laying down or cut off and upright but I can think about that as it soaks. It's hollow and about 5in in diameter.

I don't know, looks pretty rotted and with fungus spots. Are you going to boil it?

I'm thinking a bleach soak. I don't have anything big enough to boil it in. I expect a lot of rotten stuff to come off but a fair amount is solid. I have it soaking in the tank by itself now. Haven't added any bleach yet. It may be a doomed piece but I wanna try. Any input is welcomed.

The bleach should kill most, just watch for it to break down fast. If you start seeing a lot of debri on the bottom or excessive brown film while vac'ing, I'd remove it.

It's a bare bottom tank right now so looking for debris should be easy.

Thanks

Well it was soaking for 5 days and so I thought I'd give it look and see how much rotten stuff there was... Oh boy. I don't know if I can save it but we'll see. I do think there is some good stuff there but only time and elbow grease will tell.

When mgamer said good luck I think what he was really saying was "sucker".

There are times when we have to bow to those with experiance and take their word for it.

When Mr. Bishop said "I don't know. Looks pretty rotted..." that should have been my first warning... well... it was really.

I hope all my time and energy is not for naught.

Here it is so far after a long soak and a lot of scraping, wire brushing and poking around with a screwdriver. I think it'll work out after all.

definitely like the look of the finished product more than the original pic. if you can get that last piece to work, kudos to you because it looks great!

It really does look awesome. Can you make me a piece? ;)

Wow... thanks everybody. I was hoping all the work would be worth it and you guys seem to think so, so I'm doubly happy now. Working with wet wood is a new one on me but I think I'll give it another try with some more wood in my other tanks.

This piece had about 5 or 6 dry cups of rotten stuff removed to get to this point. The wire brush really helped a lot to give the wood it's look. Wood has alternating layers of hard and soft wood and the wire brush took down the softer stuff and textured the inside part to the right nicely. I wanted to somehow keep the branch part but sawing it off gave me more possibilities for how the piece can lay. I think it's maple and because it's hollow I don't think I'll have long to wait before it stays on the bottom by itself. I have a few rocks inside holding it down now. I'm thinking of opening up the crack in the front so I can see fishies swimming through a little better but I don't know. I'll decide that later.

It doesn't look like too long of an area where you wouldn't see them. I think I would leave it as is.
