Bought my new 38G set-up last week at Petco marked from $300 to $200. It has a whisper filter which I have heard many complain about, so I expected an early replacement. It is a whisper 30, which I just checked, is designed for a 30G tank, not a 38G tank. Can it do the job? Currently I have my 20G's filter running at the same time (just transferred) but I planned on using it for a back-up tank. Thoughts?

Ya the filter they sell with those are the bare minimal, for now you could run both the filters you have, on a 38 gal. eventually you will need something a little bigger.....:)

I'd run both permanently, if not an AC50.

you can never over filter. think about buying a bigger filter.

You can run both filters as a permanent solution or as stated already think about getting a bigger and better filter. Since you already have a HOB filter going on the tank maybe you can consider a smaller canister filter. I would recommend an eheim classic 2213 or 2215. Then you would have a flawless system as far as the filteration goes.
