View Full Version : Aqua-tech the same as penguin?

I've got an aqua-tech (walmart) 20-40 filter that needs an impeller assembly. I got the tank used and the filter came with a dozen or so extra cartridges, so I'd like to keep the filter, but I can't stand the noise it makes. I called about an impeller assembly today, and was quoted $19(!) for just the impeller. I have heard it's possible to add a biowheel from the penguin 170 to this filter, so I am wondering if other parts of the filters interchange, cartridges or impellers especially:) Has anyone replaced an aqua-tech impeller with one from a penguin? Do the aqua-tech cartridges fit the penguin if I have to go that route? I need some other things, so ordering a new filter is about as cost effective as just replacing this impeller, unless the $7.50 penguin impeller will work. Thanks a lot for your help.

Penguin 330 = Aqua/Tech 30/60.
They are made by the same company, so I'm guessing that they are fairly interchangeable.

Would you like your filter to have bio-wheels? If so, you can call marineland and order the parts to make your aquatech 30-60 into a penguin 330, although Ive heard the parts to do it costs almost as much as buying a penguin 330. And yes, the penguin 330 impellar should fit the aquatech 30-60 because they are exactly the same.
*Edit: Oops, I see you have a 20-40, not a 30-60.

I saw that, too...the 330 thing was the only example that I could find, but I'm sure there's a Penguin analogous to the Aqua/Tech 20/40.

I'm fairly confident that the parts will interchange.
I currently use aquatech filters along with my penguin biowheel filter just because the price is 1/2 of what a penguin one would be. They are identical, fits perfectly.
