I went to one of my local fish stores and they had 2 aligator gars for sale for $20 a piece. They were roughly 10in each. As soon as i saw them i was llike what a nut case bunch of people selling these fish. If i had a 10ft long 4ft wide 3ft high tank i'd of gladly taken them in cuz i know some idiot will think "what cool fish" and buy them without knowing how big they get or what they eat. These fish without a doubt were wild caught cuz of there attitudes towards anyone who approached the tank. It made me slightly mad to see this. I just thought i'd bring this up. Going to the fish store is one of the things i look forward to the most when i go to town. What is ya'lls opinion on this???? Thanks

It's ridiculous if they really are alligators, but most stores just label them that and actually have needlenose gars, the Asian Xenentodon cancilla. And the dimensions you described were still too small for an alligator.

Gator gars aren't often sold, b/c there should be permits from the DNR in order to sell them...ask to see the permits, and you may find out a lot more than you wanted to know...

there is a picture of an alligator gar on the net in black and white. It was caught by a man on the ohio river in the 1800s or 1900s. It was stretched across a large makeshift table and measured 8-12 feet long!

imagine feeding one of those things!

maybe they pushed the deliquent children into the river, in hopes of an accidental execution...and to keep the fish happy

here is it http://www.cryptokeeper.com/garpage.htm

I like the one at the jail...seems to be along the lines of the punishment for bad kids that you mentioned...

I've seen that picture before. I think that's absolutely incredible. I've never thought twice about swimming in the ocean after seeing Jaws, but seeing a picture like that would make you think twice about swimming in the bayou:D Alligator reptiles my butt, look out for the fish version!

What kind of feeder fish would you feed to this baby if you knew no better and took him home from the LFS.
Cheers.
