Naughty Ram acting out - advice?

Hi - I got small 2 blue rams several months ago. They had white spot, one didn't make it, but the other (I think male) made it and is now in community tank.

However, he constantly chases the 5 angels (three times his size!) and I think has caused some fin damage with his nipping. He leaves all the other fish alone, even much smaller ones.

Question, should I:

1. Return his to the fish shop for being a naughty boy? or
2. Try and find him a girl ram to preoccupy him? or
3. Ignore the problem?

Thanks

Jason

I would go for 1 or 2 as opposed to 3...I would try 2 first though if I really wanted the ram, and they are great fish from what I've seen

What's surprising is that he is acting the maggot this much in such a big tank...so maybe you just have a bit of a character there and you'd be better off with a new pair...

...have you got plenty of driftwood, rocks, plants etc. to break of line of sight ?

I also found that on introducing a new cichlid to my tank they would often go a bit mental at first for a couple/few days...sorta making their presence known I think...and then settle down.

Heaps and heaps of caves, wood, plants, a hollow trunk....it's a real amazonian paradise!

just looked at your pic thread - it certaintly is...great tank !

its a big old tank for just one of his species bearing in mind the other inhabitants...could be why he's so big for his boots...maybe he needs some company to distract him

I would add at least 2 females to 1 male.

this will allow pair forming.
the 3rd wheel out will be fine if there is plenty of cover. or add an additional male ram and hope for pair forming up with lone female.

rams are actually gregarious in nature..the time they seem to lose this behavior is when they are spawning.

Many thanks Coler & Star Rider. I will find him a potential girlfriend or two and see if that fixes him up. If getting laid doesn't change his attitude, it's back to the lfs for him!

no prob - two females like star rider says is the best option to prevent an unwilling mate being harassed to death

Two girls arrived tonight - will update on progress!

excellent - lucky fish to be going into that fabulous tank.

...and with loverboy too :D

Guys thanks for all your help!

His two new girl friends have reminded him that he is actually a blue ram not a frustrated angel. Even though they are a bit smaller, he is already swimming around with them and has stopped the aggression...and all is well again in the mini amazon based in downtown Melbourne!
