I am looking at a used tank that comes with a Magnum Canister filter, is this filter any good? Please share any knowledge or experience you have with this filter, thanks.

I would never use one as the primary filter for a tank. The media chamber is pathetically small for the size of the filter. I got two 350's with a used tank and have only used them a handful of times. They make good mechanical filters to polish the water and the media chamber is a good size for adding carbon to the tank, but as a biofilter I wouldn't trust it on a very large or heavily stocked tank alone. The micron cartridge does a decent job at spot polishings, though not nearly as good job as a true diatom filter.

If it's going to be the only filter on the tank, get the Bio-Wheel Pro 60 to connect to the canister output. The Bio-Wheels can handle the biological filtration while the canister can do mechanical/chemical filtration or polishing. In that capacity, the Magnum canisters are hard to beat. The Bio-Wheel Pro 60 is $28 on bigalsonline.com.

if i were you i would only use it as water polishing. it is not a very good filter IMo, i would go get a filstar or a fluval or even an ehiem if you wanna go all out. they are all much better filter. it should not even be sold as a canister filter it should be sold as a water polisher. IMO

at home on my 55g i have fluval 304 with biowheel pro 60s inline, they work great i just fill up the fluval with mehanical media, chemical media and then micron pads it keeps my water in excellent confdition, except on the 55g with pacus but thats because its WAY overstocked. but it does an excellent job.
