Hi
I got some danios last week and it appears that one of them has lost part of his upper fin. The boy at the LSF seemed to be manhandling them so I don't know if it was from that or a mishap in the tank.

I have segregated it for now. Will the fin grow back? If not what should I do? It won't make it in the big tank.....

It should, water changes help and melafix if you wish, one of our fish had a big chunk out of her dorsal fin, and in about a week it was heeled, i just did a couple extra water changes.. my neighborer's yellow lab lost most of its tail when it was a fry and it never grew back, seems to swim OK though......:)

the fin should grow back fairly quickly, but if there's no sign of it getting better in a week or two then it may be a deformity in the fish. if this is the case, it has probably adapted to it and should be fine, unless it seems to be having difficulty swimming. if you are too worried, i guess you might be able to take it back to the fish store and exchange it for another one, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Have you noticed any peculia white dots or bumps on the fish? It could ich, Ive read online that fins cand ecay quite badly if the fish is suffering from ich.

it realy depends on how much damage was done to the fin.

but generally portions of the fin will grow back over time..
if it lost too much of the 'boney' growth then it may not regenerate completely.

I've got a peacock that was badly done over when added to the tank by the other inhabitants. One pelvic fin was right down to a nub - I didn't hold out much hope for him.

I separated him into a breeder net to give him some respite and treated the tank with melafix for 10 days and was properly impressed with the results - 3/4 back after 2 weeks, let him back into the population and the whole thing regrew within another 2 weeks.

So you could be pleasantly surprised by the capacity to regrow finnage. Mind you he is still the colour of terror, as opposed to a beautiful blue sheen, but that may improve over time...

I'm sorry to say the poor little guy didn't make it. I fed him this morning and seemed to be happy, but was gone by lunch time. My husband was really shocked as to how rough the lfs guy was. Needless to say I was not impressed with them at all and will be searching for a better store.

It's good to know that they do grow back....

shame...no harm in telling the store what you think might have been the cause, you know, without flying off the handle at 'em.

Wish you better luck on that new store!

unfortunately, sometimes flying off the handle is the only way to get your point across

well y'know if its a kid who is acting out of ignorance then he just needs to be shown how to do it right.

we're all learning

if the whole fin was gone, bone and all, it wont grow back. if chunks of the fin are gone, they will take a while to regenerate, and if it is split it should heal in no time.

This happen to be the top part of the fin, but all the way to the fish.

Thanks again.
