I don't like the idea of permanently having it attached with fishing line... will it attach itself and if so how long does it take for this to happen?

I don't believe it will ever attach. It is really a floating plant. I use netting fro ma shower scrub to attach it to pieces of slate.

What kind of moss (besides Java moss) will attach itself. Java moss is too messy.

Consider this from Tropica:

Eleocharis acicularis is a low plant that has a grass-like appearance with fine, filamentous leaves when growing conditions are good. One new way of using it is as an anchor to keep a Riccia down. First keep the Riccia down with pebbles, then plant the Eleocharis in the Riccia with tweezers. There are more than 100 Eleocharis species, and they are difficult to distinguish from each other.

Riccia will only grow but like a mat of hair but it will not attach to the driftwood.
