I purchased an amazon sword plant due to their hardiness and can't seem to get it to grow. It keeps coming out of my gravel. Is there something i or it can attach itself to so that when i clean out my tank i don't have to replant it every week? please help!

help

I'm new to this plant thing, this is the first real plant I have ever had so i probably won't understand the terms and processes involved in keeping my plant but i really like it and would like to get others if i thought i could keep them growing at no expense to my fish. Also is there anything that the pland would attach itself to so when i vacuum my tan i can remove it without damaging the roots.
I have pool filter sand for a substrate and my nitrates stay between 10 and 30 ppm. any suggestions?

Until the sword establishes- which takes a couple of weeks, do not add ferts to the gravel as it can burn the new roots trying to develop. Plants love the stuff you normally vacuum out of a non planted tank, for them it is food. Do not vacuum around the base of the plant.

Assuming the plant came with some root mass, you should be able to plant it so that it stays in the sand. Divide the roots into two bunches sort of like an inverted /\. Then create a decent sized hole that mounds in the center like similar /\- drape one bunch of roots on either side of the mound and allow the base of the plant to sit atop the /\. Then cover it all up. If needed place a small rock on the sand above each root grouping to help hold it down.

for me, i clip the tips off the roots for new plants to encourage growth. has worked very well with results of good growth and such for years.
