I stumbled upon an old 20G Long as well as a nice pile of flagstone. I want to make a viv with a nice waterfall using the flagstone. I am trying to decide on critters. I have read all of the threads here, and consulted the LFS. The LFS said my plans for the viv would be awesome for the green tree frog. The threads and other websites I read seem to state that they need a mostly dry tank that is higher.

I want the frogs to be happy, and I don't particularly get all jazzed about the sight of the firebellies... :lipssealedsmilie: but I want to use this tank...

Any insight...? :)

No a 20 gallon long isnt very good for a tree frog! They like the height not the length like you said =) Also their not the right frog for a vivarium like you also said, they like the land with a water bowl(thats all the water they need, their not swimmers)

*sigh*

I figured... I hoped you would respond... you seem to be the resident tree frog expert ;-)

So I guess if that is the case then I should stick with firebelly toads/newts? Are they at all nice to watch in a viv? Will they croak/bark at night (I would like that!)

Thanks :)

Yes firebellys will croak! lol its not a tree frogs ARKKK but their little bark is cute =) In a 20 gallon long I would say you could house 7 of them pretty nicely. I had 4 in a 20 gallon long once, but I only had a water bowl, but if you have a vivarium set up with 1/2 or 3/4 water, 7 would be nice =)

If you get firebelly newts, they like a whole different set up. They like almost ALL water, deep water, their major swimmers lol. With a little bit of land, a turtle dock of some sort floating at the top.

I assume the FB toad and FB newt don't mix due to the toxins... I have seen the LFS house them together but they have a hardcore filtration system.

Yeah their not suppose to be together, but they really put them together because they know their going to sell them. But yeah sometimes the toad will amputate the newts arms!

Ouch.

Thanks for the great info-- I'll create a new thread when I start constructing the viv-- and I'll wait a bit before buying any fauna.

I'd also recommend firebelly toads or newts. Just remember in both cases to have A LOT OF WATER and some land.
