Interestingly scary

that's sweett!!

Will/can they shatter acrylic aquariums? 1/2" thick acrylic. And will they kill my other inverts?

huh. someone jsut showed me that video for the first time the other day...
Yes, they do eat inverts and can sometimes eat fish. most species that you will get for a goby is going to be pretty small and docile. They have poor eyesight so they dont move much without the guide of a goby. If they are fed, you shouldnt have a problem with them eating yoru inverts.
they cannot break through aquarium glass. large peacock mantis shrimp are the ones that are more known to do that. a pistol shrimp; not so much.
i also dont bleieve this video when they said the bubbles reach the temperature of the sun. The sun's energy is fushion. the lowest known temperature for fushion is 40,000,000 Kelvin, which is about 72,000,000 degrees F.
but an awesome creature none the less. i have a tiny one that came in as a hitchicker on a zoo rock. he stays hidden, but i still like looking for him in his hole at night.

You're absolutely right. What is actually happening is cavitation, it happens when there's a extremely turbulent force in the water that actually causes it to vaporise, then the vapor bubble collapses on itself and emits a ton of force, which is what the animal feels.

So basically, can your 1/2" acrylic withstand 150lbs+ of force and stay intact?

I don't know?

im pretty certain it wouldnt with a standard pistol shrimp. He woudl have to be RIGHT up against the glass. so much of the force is diffused by the water. pistol shrimp arent really a threat to glass breaking, it is the large mantis shrimp you ahve to watch out for.
then again, i dont know how big of a pistol shrimp you are tlaking about ;)
haha

the sound effects didnt seem natural, cocking the pistol sounded like a REAL pistol...
