hey all,

here is my first attempt at a vivarium, i am not sure how well it qualifies though, the plants are two various ivy's and i have a chunk of sod and grass seeds sprouting in the soil substrate, two terra cotta dishes serve as food/water receptacles, the lighting in the pics was only for the pics, usually the light is natural from being next to a window during the day, and at night i use a 25w blue incandescent to simulate moonlight

my plans are to move up to a 20G or 30G at most as she grows larger, i want to include some type of circulating pond or stream, i think the toad might try to munch fishes, he is a glutton and eats anything that moves, but we'll see, if you noticed right now the plants are potted, i want to eliminate this in my next upgrade and get a few other things growing

glad to join the forums and look forward to learning and getting new ideas

excellent setup! looks like it will be wonderful. i might recommend a solid-topped hiding area for it to feel more secure though.

also, i see you plan to make provisions for when it grows.. i once ran across an american toad as a youngster that measured a full 8 inches across the belly, and 7 front to back. it was MASSIVE, and according to my grandmother, had been living in her backyard undisturbed since before i was born. (i was 8 at the time) :p:

thanks for the input everyone! i look forward to seeing him/her grow up big and plump

i have been wondering about the sexing, did a little research but still can't figure out if it is male or female, it doesn't make a difference to me, i'm just curious

i might remove that lump of sod on the right side and replace it with live moss from the forest around where i live (upper peninsula michigan), do you think moss would take a transplant without dying? i think the moss would look more natural and fitting for the habitat,

the grass is really taking off now, still working on finding some good moss to replace the ugly chunk of sod:

just came back from a nice walk in the woods, michigan tech has a huge network of biking/walking/skiing trails available to students, got some nice fresh moss and replaced the clump of sod, i think it looks much better now, pictures coming up!
