I'm considering mixing 50% eco-complete and 50% natural gravel. I don't really care for the dark color of the eco-complete, but do like it more than Flourite. The natural gravel I have looks like crushed pecan shells in size and color. I may also add in some sand for depth and so my botias can burrow.

Would this work for a planted aquarium starting out with low light plants, but also having the flexibility to move to med/high light plants later?

i hate to call it a rule. there are many plants like java moss java fern or stuff that floats like hornwort that doesnt any any substrate. most people dont want to stick to that. its not uncommon to see takes with 4-5 inch deep of substrate depending on the plants.

a quick answer is yes. 2-3 inch deep min regardless of tank size.
