Anyone got a redtail catfish? If so... how big, and how long did it take for yours to grow that big?

You wouldn't want that cat.;) I do not keep them as I am well aware of the fact that they do not suit the private aquarium but my friend does. Hers is 4-5 feet in length.

I have one, he is about 9" right now. He was 1.5" when I bought him 3 months ago. He is currently in a 220 gal tank, but by the end of summer, he will have a tank built for him, it will be 6'L X 6'W' x 4'D.

Couple of my friends have had red tailed catfishes off and on.
They knew they couldn't keep them for very long (125gal tan), but they would buy them for a certain price at teh LFS, grow them until they got too big (or there mouths got too big and they started eating everything) and then take them back to the LFS for store credit; which was always more than what they paid for the thing.
cool lookign fish... too bad it get so **** big

I'm bidding on three 55 gallon tanks on ebay. One of the tanks is including a red tail catfish for free! IN A 55 GALLON TANK!
If I win, you'll be seeing a classified on here for one low price red tail catfish...

I have 2. I got then when they were 1 inch, and now they are almost 5inches. Got them the weekend after mothers day. They grow pretty fast. Im going to build an indoor pond for them in the next month or so. Pretty cool fish.
You should go to Monsterfishkeepers.com they know alot about them, and seems like alot of people in there have them

What can you do about it when red-tail catfishes are already available in the trade? Anyone with a very large pond may be able to keep them but anyone who doesn't have should not.

There used to be at least a dozen at the Aquarium of the Americas here that were at least 3.5' to 4.5'. Too big for the average aquarist.

I'm sure theres an MFK out there with 10 of them in a 55g tank somewhere. :grinyes:
Do you have a few thousand gallons to toss that baby in ?

i dont have one...will i ever get one? nope. why? they get to big. these guys can get to over 4 feet long, are preadatory, and make so much waste that they can easily take up the entire bioload of the tank.
id rather have a nice big school of 150 red eye tetras, 125 rummynoses, an uaru, a severum, a festivum, 6 of angels, and 25 flagtail catfish in the 600 gallon tank it needs. but thats just me ;)
