So, not that anyone wants to think of emergencies happening with their tank(s) but it is important to be prepared. I have purchased a trash barrel to offload water and keep the LR/life forms in for a temp housing...but there must be more. I do have a hose with ball valve and pump for water in (changes) and water out (changes) and would use it if there was an emergency.

WHat else should a newbie consider?

thinking ahead is a great idea, considering what can happen. Within the last week my friend's 55g melted/ burned down. It literally caught on fire and nearly burned his house down.

a backup plan is always a good idea. my buddy lost all of his fish and pretty much has to start over from scratch. Think, plan, and think and plan more. Good call.
