Does anyone know what kind of platy this is? There are sooo many common names for these.

I'm also looking for a site which lists the different types of platies, along with pictures.

Thx :)

plz ignore the 'sunset....' pic title. That's what my best guess was when I named the pic.

You may want to make sure that isn't just a female guppy...but they look a lot alike, and since I have littl experience with Platy's and a lot with Guppies, I wouldn't be the best judge.

I think that's a Guppy, too...but I could be wrong.

The body looks way too thick to be a guppy. Plus the web site on the picture says it's a platy :) As for what kind of platy, good luck on that one. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they all the same species, just different color morphs? So basically the name is whatever the supplier wants to call it.

^Agree with above.
That is an Xiphophorus Variatus, or variegated platy.
It looks to be a Rainbow Sunset Variatus. It may even have a little blue variatus in it as well.

I agree with kohartb and Slappy. That is a platy. And the common names cited are pretty, well, um... common, and can vary from region to region, and from store to store. As for the scientific name, you won't see too many variances of that, I'm afraid.

Most platies these days have been so inbred and hybridised that you could end up with anything.

The one in the pic is a variatus, the ones like that round here have a lot more yellow/green in them.
