OK I am the one that started the tankmates for Jewels thread. Right now I still have my 2 small Jewels and a small Clown Pleco in my 55. I have been reading and I like the kribs and Convicts. I want to know would it be good to get 1 Krib and 1 Convict for this tank? Or 2 of one and not the other? I am also kinda bad when it comes to knowing if I am over stocking. I wanna know how many Cichlids could I go with to be stocked nice but not over. I tend to get carried away when I buy fish and I want to do it right this time. Also I forgot to say I have a almost full grown Silver Dollar in there as well. I had him before I decided to turn the tank into a Cichlid tank. Should I keep him in there or get rid of him?The Jewels leave him alone but he is also much bigger than them. Sorry for the long post I really just wanna do the right thing. Thank you.

I'd say go with 2 con's, not a con and a krib, im not sure if jewel's are too aggressive for krib's but im assuming they are so I'd just get a couple con's but try to get a non breeding pair. or just get a single male

The Silver $ is okay since it is already established!
I'd think that Kribs are more peaceful, so I'd actually go with them!

Am I misunderstanding in thinking jewels are aggressive for some reason?? Somehow I've got them as aggressive in my mind and I don't know why

They are pretty aggressive, but Cons are more aggressive. I'd go with Kribs because they hold their own but don't actively destroy.

I was just worried that when the Jewels get bigger they would beat up on the Silver $??If I go with Kribs should I get 1 male and 1 female or 2 of one sex? I think the females have the purple patch on the belly is that right? Also I don't have sand in the tank, do Kribs really need it? Thank you ChilDawg and Optix you always answer my questions and pretty fast at that.:)

I do know the silver dollar will for sure be fine, they are usually used as target fish anyway :) and no problem about answering the questions I enjoy it. I know chilldawg will say the same.

They may beat up on the Silver Dollar, but I'm not guessing that they will or they won't. The Kribs will keep them busy, though...
No prob in answering your questions quickly...that's what we're her for, eh?

Nope, not the best...but we aspire to it! :)
I think that your comments on Krib sex differences are along the right track, but it is hard to say what you have said definitively. I'll give you a site with definitive differences between the sexes.

I'd get a couple of Kribs and not really worry about sexing them. It seems as though the Jewels are still small, so juvenile Kribs would be your best bet. This way neither will establish dominance quite yet...

I think I am correct ChilDawg about the purple patch. Here is where I read it. They call it plum but same thing

Also Kribs at my LFS are $8. for small ones does that sound expensive to you?

It does sound a little expensive.
I agree that the purple thing is evident, but I'd go with other, more-evident differences.
