Hello

A few weeks ago I bought 5 ghost shrimps and put them in a bucket of declorinated tap water at room temperature but a soon all died. Would anyone know the cause of their death, just a few hours ago i was stupid enough to buy 25 more ghost shrimp but just kept them in the same water take from my LFS just to be safe side. I want to apologize for my weird tone and thank you in advance.

I used to have 12 ghost shrimps in my tank with 1 feeder gold fish but they all died/disappeared in a week, I put 3 amano shrimps in my tank but died too :(

Gold fish will eat shrimp.

As for your first post, there are so many unknown water/environmental variables, that it is impossible to say what caused the deaths.

Ghost shrimp aren't the hardiest of animals.... could be why they are $0.10-0.80 each. :)

ghost shrimp vary greatly in hardiness; and, from what I've read, don't live much more than a year under the best of circumstances.

My latest batch of eight dropped to four (well, one got eaten by the betta) in within a week in a completely cycled tank; some of them just don't make it, but those that hang on for a week or so, in my experience, tend to make it well into old age.

hehe now i get it, i guess i should stay away from ghost shrimps next time.

i had a feeling my first bucket might be made from some odd materials that might have killed my 5 shrimps, this time i had put my 25 into a different 5 gallon bucket with only a heater but with no air/circulation pump.

so are the ghost shrimp making it into a tank? are you planning on raising them or is the bucket just temp storage until it's feeding time?

I've only just recently QTed some shrimp only because I'm QTing some Neons. I'd just toss 'em in after acclimation. Every batch I got had a loss or 2 but this last batch of 5 seems good. I've also seen some shrimp called ghost shrimp in one store that were not ghosts but some other kind.

Ive never had a ghost shrimp live longer then about 3 months. that was tops out of about 50 ghost shrimp I've had over the years. usually they last about a month or so. I like getting them when I see then at the store, even though I know they will all die soon enough.

They clean up uneaten foods, detrius, and look cool. PLus, when they dissappear, they are most likely getting eaten... and that's good fish food for fish. hehe.

bucket's only temp for those fellas, but gonna have to put in the whole batch in soon once i take out my feeder fish while he's sleeping, lol.

i'm gonna go for some amano shrimps again in my next shrimp purchase, these ghost shrimps doesn't look too hardy, but then i love these little mass scavengers.

i bought 5 ghost shrimp about 3 months ago. All of them are alive and well, 2 of them are currently carrying batches of green eggs. They are probably the most lively things in the tank. I'll put in flake food and they'll swim upside down at the top of the tank and grab the food. And i'll throw in frozen bloodworms, and the **** things go around and hold as many as they can and then take them in the corner to eat them.

hehe it's time for me to reduce the feeding load, my water always gives off a yellowish tint once i feed too much.

Aqua House,

Overfeeding is one of the quickest ways to kill shrimp. Shrimp are very sensitive to nitrite/nitrate and amonia. The general rule for feeding is, only give them an amount that will be eaten in 15 minutes. If there is any food left over, remove it from the tank.

i wish i only did it sooner, i'll be sure to put less food with more plants for my shrimpies.

I wouldn't know how to keep 'em alive. I use them to feed my senegal bichir, so I don't fuss when they die and disappear. In fact, I'm happy to see it happening. The great thing is while they're waiting to die, they do a stand up job of cleaning my aquarium. :grinyes: I know... I'm evil...:grinyes:
