Whisper Power Filter

I have a whisper 15 I believe on 2 of my 10 gallon tanks. I was wondering if I could use the aquaclear media packs (the sponges, and ceramic tube things) along with some filter floss in my filter instead of the cartridges... I'd like to just take out the cartridges and stack some media in the filter's compartments... would that be ok, or is there something wrong with this?

I know, but the bags (cartridges) start ripping apart after about a month, and they need to be replaced, which puts the tank into a mini cycle. So I was wondering if I could just drop stuff in there and not worry about bags and cartridges at all...

trim to fit and try it.

the tetra(and knock offs) use a side dump like the ac..the ac just has a media basket that makes it easier to pull the unit out to service it.

I use knock offs as they are cheaper and make mini refugiums for small SW tanks.

The media would be the same but the circulation would be different because of the way the media is packed. Usually if you try to pack your own, the circulation is slowed down.

yes, to answer your question diamond. buy some filter floss and wrap it around the bag of aquaclear media. then insert the bunch in the chamber. be sure that the does not fully fill your filter media area, as the water can overflow. it can as the water has to now push through a thicker screen of foam than before with thsoe bio bags. i did this trick a for a long time. just watch the water level on the filter that it does not start spalashing near the top edge where the cover is and you should be ok.

Thanks galen. That helps a lot. I'll try this out.

rhardy- it would actually be nice if the circulation slowed down, as long as it didn't overflow, since the filter on one of my tanks doesn't have a knob to control the circulation, and it's almost like a whirlpool in there. =P
