ive got a 25L cube, about 5.5g - planted. If i get a betta in there, how many more pygmy coryies can i have with it?

I think that just the Betta would be the most you could get. You could get a few ghost shrimp or a snail, but that would be it.

Which pygmy cory?? Hastatus??, Pygmiatus??

well... you could fit 2-3 pygmys tops.
but keep in mind that they do like to be in larger shoals, and im pretty sure they would much rather be in a larger tank, as they do a fair ammount of swimming.

hmm 2-3 pygmys wud be fine.. im just afraid that the tank is too small and they get stress which leads to unactiveness...which leads to me getting bored. ^^
anyone out there who has kept pygmys with a 5.5g cube? i would like to know how they are doing in ur tank.

pygmiatus??-no ive never heard of it.. "hastatus(dwarf)" - yes.

dvd_wightman "betta in 5gallon tank would be the most u cud get with ghost shrimp or snail" is the most ultimate classic comment i have seen throughtout many many many forums..
are you saying just because everyone else is saying it or do you really know what ur talking about? as in:-
1)u have a betta in a 5gallon..
OR
2)experienced unhealty betta when housing with pygmy cory in a 5.5g cube
OR
3)anything similiar...
hmmm 5.5 for one betta would make the tank look significantly empty. aka - boring. I've seen healthy looking fishes in cube tanks which most wud say being overstocked.. soo maybe just maybe a betta cud be housed together with a couple of corys.. =)

Look, you joined a day or 2 ago, now your acting as if you know more than a good o'l member of AC.
They have far more experiance in aquariums then you, obviously, so dont go cocky on them!
Of course you cant keep happy pigmy corys in a 5.5g!! Of course they need more than 3 to school! Of course theres a big chance theyll get depressed!!
Try cherry shrimp, or maybe a small, non-schooling fish, like... hmmm... well, you know what they are...

i would personally go with 2 dwarf puffers in a planted 5.5 gallon.
and you could always add an african dwarf frog, or some sort of shrimp .
only problem with that is you would have to be feeding live foods/frozen foods, as my DP has yet to accept flake or freeze dried foods.

hey DP's are great, and have thought of keeping them. but..im afraid they wudnt be so happy under my care as for the fact that im a beginner. i've heard that DPs aren't a beginner fish? or its not that hard to keep one?

Well, personally it wasn't too hard. I think you could definately get away with it if thats the route you wanted to go. But like i said before, mine will only eat live blackworms or frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms. picky little guys.
and just make sure to stay away from bettas w/ DPs , the DPs will nip the crap out of the bettas, even the females. I found that out the hard way.

You could do 3 Panda corys with the betta.

i Moved the 2 females to my other tank. And their tails are fully grown back! lol.
but yea, the DPs are a real interactive fish. Mine follows me around my room. and i just love how they move one eye at a time, it just boggles my mind. haha.
if you can't get live blackworms, you could really feed them frozen brine shrimp or frozen bloodworms, i only get the blackworms maybe once a month as a special snack for the fish. they can be a pain to seperate and keep in the fridge if you dont use them right away. (if anyone knew i had live worms in the fridge i wouldn't last very long)
and what kind of plants did you have in your tank. DPs love to establish territories in plants.
this is a great site about DPs

Is it okay if te puffers are in warmer water? or do i still need to heat regulate it?

Just make sure they stay in water during the moving process. DP's should not be caught with a net and placed in a container. They will suck air and likliy die. The proper way to catch these guys is in a cup under water. Here is a great site on DP care....

Bettas can be agressive with dwarf frogs and the frogs like more room than a 5 gallon.

my bettas fine with an ADF, and i've never heard of ANY problems with them and ADFs.
Frogs don't need much more room, as they sleep most of the time, and only really come out during feeding time, and to go to th surface to get air.

Maybe thats because they were unhappy, mine are very active and swim all over the tank. They like to swim back and forth and people for some reason think its fine to put them in tiny tanks, I guess its a lot like how bettas are treated. Some Bettas will get along with frogs but reading frog dedicated forums they say its best not to try. You could get away with a frog or 2 in a 5 gallon but with another fish it would probably stress them out. They are very sensitive to stress and water fluctuations. Not that i'm an expert or anything but I have been reading up on them like crazy.

^^ u need fast hands to catch a fish with a cup..
hey what if the LFS catches the DP with a net, and then sells me the fish? Can i say use a cup? or is that just inapropriate?

I tried my male betta with them, and he tried to pick at them the moment he saw em. Same with my females, they think their legs look like freeze dried bloodworms, lmao.
I disagree. Even when I bought unhealthy ones, they swam all over the bottom and all over the top before, sadly, they died.

It is best to avoid netting dwarf puffers because they can puff in air and likely to die.. Although its a small chance of happening it still can happen..Is that a risk u are willing to take? ^^
- u could use a net to catch the DP but dont lift it off the water, maybe use the net to catch the DP and then maneuver it to a cup? =)
