So there is a thing on one of my snails that has been growing slowly. Just a little bit ago I stirred the sand up in the tank to still in my new feather duster and the thing started expelling long stringy stuff. Now the stuff is floating all over the tank. I tried to get as best a picture as I could but my camera didn't want to focus so well... What the heck is this thing (the red tube thing coming off the snail with the string coming out of it)

looks like some type of tube worm I believe. I have a bunch of those on my rocks and like you, when the sand gets stirred up they all come out with there strings. They do that to catch food like a net then pull it back in to eat. As far as I know they are good for a tank and are similar to a feather duster, just much smaller and uses strings/webs instead of "feathers" to catch food.
