I have found that a Meijer in my area is selling OldKastle sand. There was a whole pallet with one bag different the different one had a crystalline silica warning while the others didn't. I went inside and bought viniger but nothing. Is it that they are distributing the Southdown in only the same areas or will the distribution area be broadened?

Southdown isn't distributed everywhere, and I don't think they really plan on expanding, since it would be up to the local retailers to request the product, which costs a lot to ship.
However, you don't need to worry about the silicates in the sand. They will not dissolve--unless your pH drops below about 3.0. By then, you won't have anything left in the tank, though.
The reason that Southdown play sand is preferred is that it can help to buffer the tank, like crushed coral will. Regular, small grained sand of any kind will work for a DSB.
