Seahorse Setup

Hi Guys,

I was trying to figure out what to do and I am selling my 2m reeftank.All inhabitants sold already.
I am researching seahorses and would like some input from you guys,
Can you go reef with seahorses(won't the flow the corals need be too much for the seahorses)??

I've found a very interesting article on Feeding Stations for seahorses(natural and artificial) and I find the seahorses absolutely amazing.

If I take a 120 to 180 l tank with about 40kg of live rock ,will I be able to use a Berlin system and not need a sump or will I have to get a sump(I am sure it will be better to have the sump)Can I keep cleaner shrimp,coral banded shrimp,Fireshrimp and red legged hermit crabs with them.(I am a bit worried about the coral bandid)

How hard is it to get tank bred horses?
What advice can you guys give me on keeping seahorses , how hard is it etc?:help:

Hi there, yes, a Full reef is usually deemed to be far too much flow for seahorses as they are very slow and only only require low water current in the system..

Yes, there is no reason why you cant go berlin without a sump, as you already know, a sump is always going to better for stability, but a sump is certainly not neccesary...

On shrimps. CB shrimps should either be kept to 1, unless you can buy a true mated pair. Fireshrimps are very up and down with regards to behavior..but have seen plenty of people have no problems either as a single shrimp or a couple in the tank...Lysmata shrimps are about the most common in the tank and have not seen anybody have any real issues with them...

I suppose the availability of seahorses will depend on where you live, here in the UK, most marine keeping fish shops all keep tank bred seahorses and are quite resonably priced...

yes, have refered qiute a few people to the site that were concidering setting up a seahorse system and the feedback about the site has been very good indeed..

You may not be able to do a full reef setup, but I hear that seahorses like to wrap their tails around gorgonians. That would look really cool IMO if you are willing to target feed the gorgonians.
 
What gorgonians would you suggest I get , (are predatory ones out of the question) ?

There are so many , what would work best?
 
In my opinion it would be best to stay away from gorgonians as they require strong current. You could get a "dead" sea fan. I must point out that I'm not speaking from experience here. My LFS had a beautiful seahorse tank with loads of corals in. He had a mixture of Xenias, Polyps, Leathers, Mushrooms but also some seaweed growing for them to hold on to. He's also suggested some rocks with holes in if you can get some so they can "hook" their tails round it. I do trust my LFS especially as he told me to get my macro algae from Ebay and not from him as his has flat worms!! How's that for an honest LFS!!!
