Ok...Maybe with this thread, we can help to put some myths to bed...

Have you ever wondered how something is done or acheived? Why does something happen the way it does?..

Example...

Why does buttered bread always fall buttered side down?

Answer would be because it is the heavier side out of the two....

you need to leave an answer to the question, and then leave a question for the next poster....simple...

So, i shall start off here, so lets see how we go......This one presented to me, and i just dont know the answer..

How does a telephone call make it from one country to another? and Via what method??...Is it one a massive underground cable or is it via satellite or something??

both undersea cables AND satellite, niko.. ;)

how did man discover that mining certain elements (iron ore, for example) and refining it would make what we today call metal? (and how was the refining process discovered?) 2 questions, really.. pertaining to the same subject.

I don't know the answer to any of that...

but how do my african cichlids know what colour they are, allowing them to try and beat the tar out of similarly coloured fish ?

suggests that fish cannot know their color, and that color recognition is a learned trait...which leads to this article..

which seems to reinforce the theory that color recognition is a learned trait, not instinctive.

the links are backwards.. but they still work.

and my question..

when doing a fishless cycle, the bacteria to start the nitrogen cycle seemingly comes out of nowhere.. where does it really come from?

"The other form of nitrogen fixation is by nitrogen fixing bacteria, who use special enzymes instead of the extreme amount of energy found in lightning to fix nitrogen. These nitrogen-fixing bacteria come in three forms: some are free-living in the soil; some form symbiotic, mutualistic associations with the roots of bean plants and other legumes (rhizobial bacteria); and the third form of nitrogen-fixing bacteria are the photosynthetic cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) which are found most commonly in water. All of these fix nitrogen, either in the form of nitrate or in the form of ammonia (nitrogen with 3 hydrogens attached). "

Why does my nextel phone work in my apartment when my cingular phone doesn't?

Sorry - should have been more clear - Hubby and I both have nextel phones for work and our personal account - which we've had for years, and worked fine until we moved here in January - is cingular. so in order to make a phone call when we are at home, we either have to use our work phones or we have to take our personal phones outside.

ahh.. i'm too lazy for physical proof right now, but it has to do with the fact that not every provider works off of the same phone towers.. kinda like radio stations.
